I’ve been thinking lately about what I’ve learned about coaching from my trainer, Stan. I’m a relatively fit person—I’ve been working out on my own for years, and I know a lot about exercise. I understand proper form in weightlifting, how to improve cardio fitness, and the importance of warming up and stretching.
I could work out on my own because I know how. So why, then, did I sign up for a small group fitness class?
Here’s the truth: even though I can do a version on my own, having Stan as my trainer makes a huge difference. He helps me focus, keeps me motivated when I’m tempted to slack off, and structures my workouts so I push myself harder than I would solo.
When I hear him shout, “Don’t stop, Jenn!” across the room, I work harder and go back to squatting even though my thighs are burning. (Also, I can’t hide in the group because everyone knows he’s talking to me when he speaks in English instead of Dutch!)
This got me thinking about my role as a writing coach. Many of you already know that you should guard your writing time, manage your procrastination, or handle the challenges of ADHD when tackling complex projects.
You’ve probably picked up a variety of strategies along the way. But, like me with my workouts, maybe what you need is that extra push to stay consistent, stay motivated, and do your best work.
That’s where writing coaching comes in. It’s not just about teaching you things you don’t already know; it’s about helping you implement those things when motivation is low or life gets in the way. It’s about having someone in your corner, giving you the structure, accountability, and encouragement you need to follow through.
