Greetings, Publish Not Perish fam! I want to start by thanking all of you who have shared the newsletter over the past several weeks. I hit my first milestone of 1000 subscribers! I appreciate your engagement with the posts as it’s so heartening to know I’m not writing in a void, I’m writing in community. Thanks for trusting me with your valuable time.
I usually post a roundup of writing-related media I've recently consumed at the end of each month. Now that there are so many more subscribers, I'd first like to tell you a little bit more about the woman who comes to your inbox each week with her writing musings.
A Little About Me
Marfa, Texas | September 2022
I’m a feminist media scholar who writes about gender, race, and sexuality in sports media industries. I'm in my fourth year as an assistant professor in the Department of Radio-Television-Film at the University of Texas at Austin in the American South. My PhD in Communication is from the University of Washington, where I was trained in humanistic and critical/cultural approaches to media research. Now you know where all the my critiques of the neoliberal academy stem from! Critical/cultural analysis runs through my veins as a scholar, and writing is a form of resistance.
I started this newsletter because I've struggled as a writer at various points in my career and have dedicated a significant amount of time to figuring out how to overcome these obstacles. I believe it is critical to examine these struggles publicly in order to make the academy more transparent for others who are also struggling. Plus, mentoring and coaching are some of my true joys in my job, so writing this newsletter extends that joy even further. Stay tuned for future updates on how I plan to expand the work I’m doing in Publish Not Perish!
In my spare time, I enjoy traveling and practicing Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. I’ve spent about 10 years of my life living outside the U.S. and am thrilled to see that Publish Not Perish has readers from around the world. You can read a bit about how my jiu-jitsu practice relates to writing in Lessons from Martial Arts on Writing and Failure.
Now for the roundup! Here’s some of my favorite media I’ve consumed over the past month on writing, productivity, and managing all-the-things. Some of this content is new, some of it is old, but all of it has kernels of wisdom for busy academic writers. I’m also including some photos I took during a trip to West Texas in September.
