Last week, Dr. Katy Peplin shared a guest post on Shutdown Routines. While she offers a plethora of actionable strategies for wrapping up the workday, what really resonated with me was her recognition that there's no one-size-fits-all approach to being a scholar. It's such a breath of fresh air to hear someone emphasize that not all advice is universally applicable in this profession. How often have you heard guidance from a senior scholar that seemed like you should follow it with some sort of religious faith? This happens far too often, and sometimes their advice is simply, well, bad.

I want to talk a bit more about advice as dogma, as I think that so much of the advice that circulates comes off as the “right way to do this career.”
