Not that I'm writing a monograph, but as a HATER of IMRAD (probably because it's basically mandatory when you are a PhD student) i'm extremely happy to read this take! I think the difficulty may stem from the fact that many dissertations are also structured around IMRAD, with separate lit review/methods/results chapters. Although this may be dependent on context, country, discipline, etc.
I’ve never liked reading IMRAD either. Luckily I write more for humanistic journals so I’ve never had to do it myself. There are good reasons for it from a social science perspective but it’s just not the scholarship I want to read! And that’s part of the reason I gravitate towards book writing. There’s so much more room for creativity and other ways of writing.
