Once I have some snippets, I find a couple of days of binge writing helps me flesh it out, go off track usefully (and sometimes just off-track-to-be-deleted-soon). I rest it for a day or two. I re-read it and can then manage to see more of the real argument/structure. Then the writing becomes more planned and measured. Depending on the length of the project, there might be a number of binge/measured writes. Research time to check the lit again due to something I wrote that took off in a different direction or because I suddenly realized I had missed a chunk of likely-existing lit. What's now gone is the useful conversation that sometimes popped up while teaching. With fiction....it's about plot where events/environments/and characters all intersect and how those features change due to the interactions. BUT, I was always more teacher than writer.
